“Repeal Day is here.  Saturday.  The next biggest drinking holiday ever.   The day we celebrate our innate right to get completely wasted as protected by the constitution of the United States of America.” Scott preaches.

“Where are we going to go? Out? Stay in? Make moonshine in the tub?” Sara asks.

“No moonshine in the girls’ tub, thanks.”  Tabitha says.

“You could use ours.” Scott says.

“I don’t trust ever getting your tub clean.  I’m afraid I’ll catch swine flu just looking at it.” Ann says.

“Oh, it’s not that bad.  Besides, the alcohol will kill the germs.”  Frank says.

“We’ll just go out.  Beer place? The Ginger Man?” Sara suggests.

“What about one of those speakeasy places?  Really get into the theme of the day.  Milk and Honey, or that Crif Dogs place..PDT.”  Billy suggests.

“I don’t know if I feel like drinking high quality martinis.  They’re too strong for me.” Ann complains.

“And too expensive.  Way too expensive.”  Tabitha adds.

“Do we want to just stick to local then, go to Catalina’s?” Frank asks.

“Boo! No Catalina’s.  Gotta do something special.” Scott insists.

“There’s this other bar that I’ve heard of, that’s supposed to be good with craft beers, and regular alcohol as well.  Rattle N Hum. It’s in midtown.”  Sara suggests.

“Arr! Be it a pirate bar?” Billy asks.

“Ahoy Matey!  Me will bring me eyepatch!” Scott says.

“I don’t think it’s a pirate bar..I don’t know what it’s named for though, so maybe.  I’ve never been there.  But I’m not associating with you if you’re wearing an eye patch and talking like a pirate.”  Sara says.

“Party pooper.” Billy says.

“Girls don’t really go for the pirate thing anyway.  You’re better off.”  Ann says.

“She’s got a point there.”  Scott agrees.

“So, we’re agreed?  Rattle N Hum Saturday night for Repeal Day?  Good.  I’ve got to go now, I’m working tonight.”  Ann says, going to her room to get ready.

“Now that we’ve settled that, lets watch the Nets try to set records for suckiness.” Frank says, turning on the tv.

Subject: Thanksgiving is Coming

All six of the 6^th Floor Gang are out to dinner, It’s Sunday night, and they’re discussing the short week and Thanksgiving.

“Are we all staying here again this year? Or are some of you escaping to your families?” Ann asks.

“I haven’t actually decided yet. My parents invited me home, but I’m feeling lazy about making the trip.” Tabitha says.

“My parents stopped doing holidays years ago.” Billy says.

“Likewise. Now they just use the four day weekend for vacations. I think they’re leaving for San Diego Tuesday night.” Scott says.

“My brother John was going to come to New York with my sister, who’s never been to New York, but he couldn’t really take off of work to get here, and it’s a bit expensive. So I’ll be around.” Frank says.

“My family is actually celebrating on Saturday. So I’ll be free Thursday.” Sara says.

“Celebrating Saturday? That’s..just..wrong.” Frank admonishes.

“Yeah, everyone knows you can only be thankful on Thanksgiving. After that you’re required to go back to being a selfish, cruel American.” Billy says.

“Especially in New York.” Frank adds.

“Are we getting our party on Wednesday night?” Scott asks, hopefully.

“Actually..while I’ll be here for Thanksgiving, and even would be willing to cook a bird, I’m going home to Long Island Wednesday night.” Ann says.

“Long Island? Why would you do something like that?” Scott asks, confused.

“Couple of high school friends are getting together to go out. And you always run into other old high school friends at bars in our home town.” Ann explains.

“Boo! Tell them to come to Manhattan. You don’t really want to go to a trashy Long Island townie bar to run into classmates you hated when you were in school and probably still hate now do you?” Scott asks.

“We flipped a coin, and it was decided I would come there instead of the three of them coming here. I’ll just crash at my parents place, but I’ll be back in the morning.” Ann says.

“If you can stay vertical enough to board a train anyway.” Billy says.

“I doubt I’ll drink that much that I’m hungover until dinner…” Ann says.

“Then you’re doing it wrong.” Sara says.

“How about you come with me and show me how it’s done then? My parents have an extra bed you could crash on..” Ann invites.

“You’re on!” Sara says.

“Hey now, you’re inviting her but not us?” Scott complains.

“Girls only. Sorry.” Ann says, sticking out her tongue.

“Tab? Want to come as well?” Ann asks.

“No thanks. I’ll just stay here, maybe I’ll bake a pie or something.” Tabitha says.

“Guess it’s just us guys here in Manhattan.” Scott notes.

“We don’t need no stinkin’ girls anyway.” Billy says.

Subject: Maybe It’s Fall After All

“I give in. It’s fall.” Frank says.

“What made you give in? The couple of cold days we’ve had?” Tabitha asks.

“It’s hasn’t really been that cold.” Billy says.

“Well, it’s fall, not winter. It certainly hasn’t been summer weather.” Tabitha says.

“I know what convinced him.” Sara, who is sitting on the couch next to Frank watching tv, says. “Sam Adams has a new harvest mix out.

“Have we really decided to tell the seasons by beer?” Ann asks.

“That sounds like us.” Billy says.

“Does Sam Adams have a spring ale, or are we going to be stuck in Winter until they release the summer pack?” Tabitha asks.

“I don’t think they do.” Sara says.

“I vaguely remember a spring ale, but no spring variety pack.” Frank says.

“They’re releasing lots of packs lately. Maybe this year will be a first.” Sara says.

“Or winter can last longer. I really like Old Fezziwig Ale anyway.” Ann says.

“Fezziwig is a slang term used throughout America’s heartland meaning ‘man who gets very drunk at Christmas’. The term is believed to have originated in Wichita, Kansas.” Sara recites from her laptop.

“Wikipedia?” Tabitha asks.

“Yeah. Apparently Old Fezziwig is a Dickens character from A Christmas Carol. He’s a jolly fat man basically the opposite of Scrooge.” Sara says.

“Seems fitting.” Frank says.

“Lets compromise. It’s not officially fall until Frank brings home one of these harvest variety packs.” Billy says.

“Sounds fair. I want to try to Dunkelweizen.” Sara says.

“I’ve always enjoyed the Octoberfest myself.” Billy says.

“I like the Cherry Wheat.” Tabitha says, looking over Sara’s shoulder to see which beers it contains.

“It’s settled then.” Frank says, grabbing his keys and wallet and heading for the door. “I’ll be back in a bit.”

“We’re not going anywhere.” Ann answers.

“Nope. Hurry back though. Now I’m thirsty.” Sara says.

Subject: Craft Beer Week

“Where’s Scott? I feel like I haven’t seen him in a couple of days.” Frank asks.

“Scott’s been in California for an old high school friend’s wedding since Wednesday. He’ll be back Thursday. Which you’d know if you were ever awake during normal hours.” Tabitha replies.

“It’s 2:30! How is that not a normal hour?” Frank asks.

“He does have a point.” Sara says.

“I play poker, just assume I’m on pacific time. Like Vegas.” Frank explains.

“Couldn’t you be on Atlantic City time? Match us a little better?” Tabitha asks.

“Stop knocking my sleep patterns. Anyway, Scott’s gonna miss Craft Beer Week.” Frank says.

“I’d forgotten about that. I’m in.” Sara says.

“Is it that pay one price drink all evening thing we did last year?” Ann asks.

“Actually, that’s not until June. This is different. There are a bunch of different events, but the one I’m excited about is 60 different cask ales across three bars this weekend.” Frank says.

“Actually, we missed one Labor Day weekend. I don’t know what’s wrong with us.” Sara says.

“We did? Doh.. Anyway, There are some walking tours and food pairings during the week, but I think the cask beer is the best event. Who wants to come?” Frank says.

“I’ll do it. Cask beers are always so interesting.” Sara says, raising her hand.

“Nah, too expensive for me. I don’t appreciate beer the way you guys do. Give me a simple Corona and I’m happy.” Tabitha declines.

“I’ll come. I had plans tomorrow but they fell through. Might as well do something.” Ann says.

“Billy?” Frank asks.

Billy, who’d been half dozing on the couch the entire time looks up at Frank. “That’s fine. Buy me a ticket and I’ll pay you tomorrow.” Billy says, closing his eyes again.

“What’s with Rip Van Winkle over there?” Frank asks.

“He worked a really early shift this morning. Just got home a little while ago but didn’t want to nap before we get dinner. We’re going out to that Mexican place remember?” Tabitha explains.

“Oh. Right.” Frank says.

“What would you do without me to explain things to you?” Tabitha asks.

“I’d probably just order Chinese.” Frank retorts.

“Mexican is better than Chinese-American food any day.” Ann says.

Billy gives a silent thumbs up from the couch.

Subject: Is Summer Over?

“Why is everyone suddenly panicking and talking about summer being over and last chance to do this or that? It’s only August 21st!” Frank exclaims.

“Colleges start, Kids go back to school soon. Labor day is always considered the unofficial end to summer.” Ann says.

“Summer is just summer. If you’re not a kid I don’t get what the big deal is. Not like you get more time off. I suppose leaving work and it being light out is preferable for most than January when it’s dark early..” Sara muses.

“Everything is about families and kids. You know that. People don’t get any more vacation time, but they’ll often save it for a family trip in the summer when their kids are off. That’s why Disney is crazy..crazier..during the summer.” Tabatha explains.

“The weather does start to get a little cooler in September too.” Ann says.

“There are always weekends for much of this stuff. It’s not like you can’t drive to the shore or the Hamptons after school on Friday and spend all weekend there. The weather is still warm in early September many times. It’s certainly not cold until well into October most years.” Frank rants.

“I don’t think anyone has ever been irreparably harmed by missing a week of school to go to Disney or somewhere else in October. Especially grade school. Are people that boring that they all have to take the same vacations during the same time of year and have the same experiences?” Billy asks.

“Yeah. Pretty much.” Ann replies.

“People might say the same about your desire to drink heavily every weekend.” Tabitha says.

“Weekend? When has it being Wednesday stopped us?” Frank asks.

“Besides, we don’t drink and avoid doing other things. We’re all open to new ideas. I agree with Frank though, people treat this time of year like it’s the death of fun until next June.” Scott says.

“Me and Frank had a blast with our spontaneous trip down to Atlantic City last weekend. It’s not like it’s impossible to have fun.” Sara says.

“If you’ve got a kid or two, maybe a dog, these things become harder. Can I get a sitter? Do I take the kids with me? Will little Johnny next door walk Rover for me? Does anyone have a basketball game that we’d miss or piano lessons?” Tabitha says.

“So you shouldn’t try to have some fun just because it might be a little harder?” Frank asks.

“No, you can have fun whenever you want. It just tends to be more planned when you have more to worry about. It’s a sacrifice, but many parents find plenty of enjoyment with their kids or less spontaneous ways to have fun.” Tabitha explains.

“That’s why I’m not sure I even want kids. Loosey Goosey.” Sara says.

“I think we should have a summer’s not over party.” Scott muses.

“Excellent idea. We’ll pick up a case of Sam Adams Summer Ale, make frozen drinks with little umbrellas…” Frank says.

“Knowing their luck, it’ll drop to 50 degrees when they decide to have it and everyone will be cold.” Sara says.

“That just means more cuddling to keep warm.” Scott says, moving close to Sara.

Sara rolls her eyes and walks away.

Subject: Black 20

It’s Saturday evening and Ann, Tabitha and Scott are hanging out in the kitchen when the door opens and Sara and Frank stroll in, looking completely exhausted.

“Aww, you’re not the pizza guy!” Scott grumbles.

“Back from Atlantic City? I thought you guys weren’t staying.” Ann says.

“We changed our minds. It was a crazy night.” Frank explains.

“Maybe we should’ve come back last night.” Sara muses.

“Maybe, but then we wouldn’t have a story to tell.”

“Gaffigan was funny. That would’ve been enough wouldn’t it have been?”

“Come on! You’ve never seen a roulette dealer put the marker down on the wrong number before. New experiences are always good.”

“He put it on the wrong number? Did you catch it in time? Did you have to wait for them to go to the video?” Scott asks.

“She’d cleared all the chips and started paying out on the wrong number. The pit boss just kinda took our word for it about where we had chips.”

“Wow. So you played roulette…did you win?” Ann asks.

“I only..” Sara is cut off by the knock at the door. This time it’s the pizza guy Scott was expecting. Scott pays him and brings the pizza to the table. “I only lost $10 playing roulette, and I played a while. I did win $40 playing video poker though. That almost paid for my half of the hotel.”

“What’d you play Frank? Or do I even need to ask?”

“I did hang out with Sara at the roulette wheel for a while, but I didn’t do that well. Afterwards I went to play poker, where I did much better.”

“I did get to bed at a semi-reasonable 3am. I don’t think Frank showed up until 5.”

“I was having a good run, and I didn’t want to quit. It wouldn’t be so bad if we hadn’t already said we’d meet Brett for breakfast at 10am.”

“Yeah, that’s what made it really brutal. If we’d slept until noon I probably wouldn’t feel this worn out.”

“Then we’d have missed the hungover bachelorette party.”

“Completely hungover group of girls that looked like they’d barely rolled out of bed.”

“Why did they? They probably should’ve slept it off.” Tabitha asks.

“Hair of the dog.” Sara explains.

“Nice.”

“They were all sitting at the bar drinking bloody marys. They were still there when we left the buffet.”

“This time drinking miniature bottles of champagne.”

Subject: Romantic Updates

Frank meanders out of his room to find Tabitha lounging on the couch watching tv.

“Hey, You’re not usually home during the day are you?” Frank asks.

“Not regularly. They cut my secretary hours at work a bit. I was only doing 30, but now I’m doing 25. Rough times I guess.” Tabitha says.

“Bummer. Well, you want to eat?” asks Frank.

“It’s about that time. Yes. Pizza?” Tabitha suggests.

“Nah. In more of a Mexican mood. “ Frank responds.

“I approve. Let me just grab my coat.”

“Coat?” Frank asks, “It’s summer and hot as hell out there!”

“Except in restaurants, where they tend to overdo the air conditioning.” Tabitha says, heading for the door.

They walk down the stairs and down the block to the restaurant. There was only one table left, a two person table outside.

Frank sits down and looks around. “You’re right Tabitha, this air conditioning is unbearable!”

“Oh, shut up.” Tabitha replies, putting her coat on the back of her chair.

“Margarita please. On the rocks.” Frank orders.

“Not a bit early for margaritas?”

“It’s lunch time. It’s Mexican. You’re not going to let me drink alone right?”

Tabitha starts to object, and then thinks better of it. “Sure, I’ll have a frozen strawberry one.” Tabitha says to the waiter.

Waiter: “Coming right up.”

“So how’s Rose these days?” Tabitha asks.

“Oh, umm..we broke up a couple of weeks ago.” Frank says.

“Oh, sorry. I wondered why you didn’t seem to be going out as much. So no one new yet?”

The margaritas come, and they order food. “No, not right now. Dating someone is a lot of work. I notice you haven’t been dating anyone in a while.”

“Working at that IT place all I meet are geeky guys that want to talk about Star Wars or routers or whatever.”

“Maybe you should introduce them to Sara?”

“Sara doesn’t like geeky guys. She says they always are trying to one-up her with technical jargon to prove they aren’t out-geeked by a girl.”

“That’s..sad. These guys have enough trouble finding women and they chase away the only ones with similar interests?” Frank rolls his eyes.

“They don’t called it socially awkward for nothing.”

“Ann just started dating someone new right? Rick..Ray..something with an R..”

“Robert. I think they’ve only gone out twice so far.”

“Doesn’t count until at least three in my book.”

“I’m not sure she cares whether you think it counts or not.”

“She better care!” Frank does his evil overlord laugh.

Tabitha quirks her eyebrow at Frank. “Oh, drink your margarita and stop your silly laugh.”

They finish their food, pay, and leave. No more evil laughter occurs during lunch.

Subject: Smells like Summer

Tabitha, Ann, Scott and Frank are in Starbucks at lunch time.

“At least it’s finally warm.”

“Summer has finally arrived, yes.”

“Still raining though. Still raining..”

“I’d rather go back to winter. You can always tell it’s summer by the way the city smells.”

“The rain is only making that worse. It smells like a swamp.”

“Soon the sunlight will start warming that stagnant water, that’s full of cigerette butts and garbage, stewing it to a beautiful New York City scent.”

“They should make candles. Like those vomit flavored Jelly Bellys. NYC Summer candles.”

“What I wouldn’t give for a whiff of that syrup smell from Jersey right now.”

“I had an apartment once, third floor, directly above the dumpsters. We couldn’t open the window in the summer at all, or the whole apartment would reek of trash. We couldn’t have an air conditioner, just four fans that we kept constantly running.”

“That sounds rather miserable. I can’t imagine you spent much time there during the day.”

“Weekends mostly. We kept ourselves well stocked in beer. Any day we spent there we pretty much ended up drunk. I remember one day when I got stuck waiting for the cable guy during the week, and he showed up at the end of his 10-2 window. He must’ve thought I was a degenerate alcoholic or something. I must have downed 10 cold ones while waiting for him.”

“I’m confused Scott, how is that different from your drinking habits nowadays?”

Frank snickers.

“Now I wouldn’t be as obviously drunk with 10 beers.”

“So all you’ve gained over these years is a bit of alcohol tolerance?”

“And a bit of a beer belly.” Tabitha says, poking Scott’s tummy.

“Hey now!” Scott says, mock insulted, “I’m not the one panicking about fitting into a dress for my cousin’s wedding!”

“That’s only because my cousin thinks you’re a creep, and didn’t invite you to the wedding.”

“Aww, I’m sorry Scott. I know how much you like to wear a nice dress.”

Frank starts laughing uncontrollably, drawing weird looks from some of the other customers.

Subject: Cinco De Mayo

If you read this blog even occasionally, you know we wouldn’t let a drinking holiday go to waste. While Cinco De Mayo is no Repeal Day, that’s no excuse not to enjoy it. To celebrate, Frank made some Strawberry Infused Tequila.

“Tequila!”

“Strawberry infused for the win. I figure we can mix it with orange juice. Mexican Tequila Sunrises!”

“Wings? We should pick up some.”

“Text Billy. Make him bring home enough for five.”

“Bring what?” Billy asks, walking in the door.

“You’re home too soon dude. We wanted wings.”

“Just order them. That place a couple blocks down delivers right?”

“Those wings suck.”

“Better than going out. Sara! Happy Cinco de Mayo!”

“Hey, you’re right. Got something special planned?” Sara asks, as she leaves her room to put her coffee mug in the sink.

“Strawberry infused tequila apparently.”

Ann emerges from her room as well. “Did I hear strawberry infused tequila? That sounds..interesting.”

“Putting strawberrys in the alcohol makes it healthy right?”

“Of course Tab. It’s good for you. And Tequila is made from agave, so it’s a plant!”

“Can just do shots of it too. The strawberry probably gives it a nice smoothness.”

“No training wheels though.”

“Nope. I’ve learned that lesson.”

“I don’t know that citrus and salt would go well with the strawberry anyway.”

“Maybe a sugar coated kiwi? Like kiwi-strawberry juice?”

“No. Just do the shots. Frank, pour!” Scott commands.

Frank arranges six shot glasses, and pours out some of the tequila.

“Viva la Mexico!” Billy says, and takes his shot. The others give him a weird look, and then drain their own glasses.

Subject: Green Guinness

The following takes place Saturday, March 21^st. Sara forgot to get beer on her way home on St. Patricks Day, so Frank decided they would ‘be Irish’ on Saturday as well.

“There she is! Finally!” Frank exclaims, as Sara walks in.

“Did you get the goods?”

“I certainly did. The question becomes..can you drink them all?” Sara places a case of Guinness on the counter. Ann follows from the hallway, placing a second case on the counter.

Billy breaks out into a huge grin. “48 Guinnesses..guinnies? no.. Beers! I think we can do this. That’s what…like eight each?”

“More like 12 each, since Ann and Sara don’t like Guinness. No way I’m drinking 12.”

“Actually, since I’ve become overly addicted to coffee, Guinness has grown on me. Can we make it green though?”

“Yeah!”

“Guinness is black..No way you can dye it.”

“They dye chocolate red for red velvet cakes, why not beer?”

“Just pump some green food coloring in there. I’m sure it’ll dye the bubbles at least.”

Tabitha grabs a bottle, opens it, and adds some green food coloring. She then pours it out into a glass.

“Wow..that actually looks kind of cool. Happy St. Patricks Day!” Tabitha takes a big gulp.

Everyone mixes up their own Green Guinness, even Ann has one, and the night degenerates from there.
