The New York Times Magazine

Welcome to the 6th floor.
Today’s contributors are: Ann, Sara, Frank

Subject: The New York Times Copy Cats

Sara is sitting on the coach with her laptop, and Frank is pouring himself a mugful of coffee when Ann walks in the door.

“Hey Ann, did you hear the news?” Sara asks.

“About the Gray Lady? Yes.” Ann answers.

“What has the Times done this time?” Frank asks.

“They’ve stolen our blog name.   They created a blog called ‘The 6th Floor: Eavesdropping on the New York Times Magazine.” Ann answers.

“Copy Cats!” Frank exclaims.

“Actually, it’ll probably be good for traffic.” Sara says.

“This will be the first update in 14 months, I suspect we’d have to do better than that.” Ann retorts.

“Well for starters, don’t link to do it.” Sara lectures.

“I doubt reader(s) won’t be able to find it if they search..” Frank muses.

“That’s fine, but keep the page rank down.” Sara says.

“It’s the freaking New York Times.  I’m positive it won’t have trouble drumming up readers.” Ann says.

“Fair enough.  At least it’s a little verification that you picked a cool name.” Sara says.

“Good enough for the Times, it’s good enough for us!”

Unplugged

Welcome to the 6th floor.

Today’s contributors are: Ann, Sara, Tabitha, Billy

Subject: E-Cleanse

(geeze, we didn’t post for a month.  How lazy.  I guess I’m just lucky no one cares.)

Tabitha and Billy are fiercely debating something as Ann walks in the door of the 6th Floor, carrying a bag of flour and a box of strawberry Jello.  Sara is on the couch, legs crossed, with her laptop.

What’s up guys? Debating world peace?” Ann asks.

No no, we’re talking about John Mayer and his digital cleanse.”  Tabitha explains.

unplugDigital cleanse?” Ann asks, putting the groceries away.

Don’t ask.” Sara says.  “It’s stupid.”

Mayer’s, as posted on his blog, doing this digital cleanse thing, where he doesn’t use Twitter, texting, etc.” Tabitha says.

Tabitha said maybe she should do it, and I said that the way Mayer describes it is pretty lame, and she should do a more complete cleanse.”  Billy says.

He’s really just saying that people’s lives are defragmented and they need to commit more solid time to interactions.”  Tabitha argues.

“Ooooh, he learned a new computer word and made up some silly blog post to apply it to life.  I thought his music was rock, not emo.”  Sara says.

Ouch, harsh.  What have you got against John Mayer Sara?”  Ann asks.

“Nothing.  I just think the cleanse thing is stupid.  There is nothing wrong with using computers or Twitter or whatever.” Sara says.

I dunno.  I’m tired of feeling like there are a zillion things to check every time I touch a computer, I’m tired of tending my Farmville farm.”  Tabitha says.

I’ll do it with you for a week, but only if it’s a full unplug.  None of this ‘email from real computers, no gossip sites stuff.’  All of it.” Billy says.

Fine.  I think the no-texting thing might be tough though.  Or are we doing no cellphones entirely?”  Tabitha asks.

I don’t know if we can get away with no calls whatsoever.  But no texting seems fair. It’s about being unplugged and not in constant communication all the time.  Try to only use it for emergencies.”  Billy says.

If it’s on me, I’m going to end up using it.  If someone needs to get in touch with us..everyone knows where we work, where we live, etc.  Your phone doesn’t even work at work since you spend most of your time in Subway tunnels anyway.. “ Tabitha reasons.

Good point. Okay, no phones at all then. You going to join us Ann?  I know Sara will just yell at me if I ask.” Billy says.

Umm…nah..I don’t need another excuse to not use the Internet and not blog.  It’s been like a month and all I’ve written is two half posts that had to do with Christmas and shopping that just seem..outdated now.”  Ann says.

Okay.  We start tomorrow when we wake up.  Got that Tabitha?  One week?” Billy asks.

One week.  May all my Farmville crops wither up, etc.”  Tabitha says.

“You guys are insane.”  Sara says, rolling her eyes and retreating to her room.

Get Up, Get Out

Welcome to the 6th floor.

Today’s contributors are: Ann, Sara, Frank

Subject: Leave the Apartment!

Sara is sitting on the couch, in her pajamas, with a big mug of coffee watching tv when Ann gets home. Frank is in the kitchen warming up leftover quesadillas from dinner last night.

From Pictures

Sara..still in pjs? Have you left the apartment at all this week?” Ann asks.

Umm..” Sara thinks. “I think I took out the garbage on Tuesday.”

So out of the apartment for two minutes, but haven’t seen the light of day?” Ann comments.

Outside!” Frank scoffs, “Who needs it.”

I guess no interviews this week?” Ann asks.

Actually, I talked to a recruiter yesterday. I may have one early next week.” Sara responds.

So you might actually get out into the world next week.” Ann says.

Since we’re going to go see Zombieland tomorrow night, I assume she’d make it outside this weekend.” Frank comments.

If she still remembers how to get dressed anyway.” Ann says.

Sara sticks out her tongue at Ann.

I don’t think they have a dress code at the theater. They’d probably let her in like that.” Frank says.

I hope she’s showered at least. Otherwise you’re sitting next to her.” Ann says.

I showered!” Sara says.

It’s alright.” Frank says, ignore Sara. “We’ll put her next to Billy. He won’t smell her over the popcorn that he seems to get at every movie.”

I don’t smell!” Sara says.

Good idea. Unless we put Sara in the middle and have her hold the popcorn. Mask her odor.” Ann theorizes, ignoring Sara.

Oh fine, I’ll shower.” Sara concedes, handing her coffee mug to Ann and heading to the shower.

Well, that was pretty easy.” Ann says, dumping the coffee down the drain.

Frank gasps. “You dumped her coffee? She’ll kill you!”

Eh. She drinks too much coffee anyway. It’s good for her to cut back.” Ann says.

Frank chuckles, “It’s your life.”

Walking Resolution

Welcome to the 6th floor.

Today’s contributors are: Ann, Tabitha, Frank.

Subject: Walking

Ugh!” Tabitha says. “I’ve been so lax with weight loss and exercise.”

From Pictures

Wasn’t it your New Years Resolution to lose weight?” Ann asks.

Now it’s my October resolution.” Tabitha says.

Maybe I should resolve that..I’ve been meaning to introduce a little more activity into my lifestyle.” Frank says from the couch.

You mean taking a break from poker on the couch to get a beer from the fridge isn’t active?” Ann jibes.

Hey now! Weren’t you just saying yesterday you wanted to be a little healthier? Especially before the holidays?” Frank replies.

I always look back at holiday pictures of me and cringe. Not this year.” Tabitha says, adamantly.

Let’s at least go for a walk.” Ann says.

I could get behind a walk.” Tabitha says.

Uptown or downtown?” Frank asks.

It’s not like we live in San Francisco where one way is uphill..what does it matter?” Ann says.

We still have to choose whether we turn left or right at the corner.” Frank says.

We’ll exit the building, turn right, then turn left and go downtown. Acceptable?” Tabitha says, grabbing her coat.

They exit the building and start walking west.

How many blocks are we doing?” Frank asks, as they reach the corner. “I’m already kinda tired.”

Well, what’s the formula..10 blocks is a mile?” Ann asks.

No. That can’t be right, seems too short..20?” Tabitha asks, as they head south.

20 is the number I’ve heard. So..we’ll do 15 and turn around?” Frank asks.

A mile and a half? I guess that’s okay.” Ann says.

We don’t need to turn around. We’ll turn left and head back up the next avenue. Change of scenery.” Tabitha says.

It’s cold out today.” Ann says, nothing the wind blowing some papers across the street.

Yeah. Glad I brought my jacket.” Tabitha replies.

Oooh, street cart. Let’s get a pretzel.” Frank says, reaching for his wallet.

No!” Tabitha says, grabbing Frank’s hand and pulling him along. “That defeats the purpose of exercise.”

Oh fine.’ Frank says.

24 Reruns, X-files, and Crank

Welcome to the 6th floor.

Today’s contributors are: Ann, Tabitha, Frank, Billy and Scott.

Subject: 24 Recap, Season 1

Jack Bauer: “The following takes place between 8am and 9am on the day of the California presidential primary.”

From Pictures

I can’t believe you guys are watching old episodes of 24. Doesn’t it ruin it knowing what’s going to happen already?” Ann asks of Frank, Billy, and Scott who are sitting on the couch riveted.

Nah, it’s still good stuff.” Scott says.

Really makes Jack look stupid knowing what’s going to happen though. It seems so obvious.” Frank observes.

I doubt you thought it was obvious the first time through.” Tabitha says.

No, but in the more current seasons of 24 it’s a lot easier to suspect.” Frank says.

That’s because we know their style now. I don’t think they’d ever pull a Nina over on us again.” Billy says.

Watching it over, they all but tell us who the bad guys are, and we still didn’t get it. This is why the first seasons were the best. Pure.” Scott says.

I can’t get into shows that are always killing main characters. I think it’s depressing.” Tabitha says.

Oh, It’s the best. You can watch the show for the action and plot without getting attached to the soap opera of the character interactions season after season.” Billy says.

But I like that stuff!” Tabitha says.

They keep Jack around at least.” Frank says.

They ‘kill’ Jack at least a couple of times don’t they?” Ann asks.

Yeah, but that’s one of the ruses you always see through. They can kill whoever they want besides that, but the show would never go on without Jack.” Billy says.

Like when Mulder and Scully were off the X-Files.” Ann says.

We never did see the new X-Files movie. Someone should probably Netflix that.” Frank says.

I’ve heard nothing about it. That must mean it was completely horrible.” Ann says.

Can’t hurt to find out.” Scott says.

From Pictures

Queue’d up. I bumped it to position one in front of Crank: High Voltage.” Tabitha says.

Aww! I want Crank..” Frank says.

You saw it in the theaters. You can wait. Not like Crank 3D is out soon anyway.” Ann says.

Fine, but I’m going to make fun of X-Files constantly if it sucks that badly.” Frank says.

As we all will.” Ann says.

Bejeweled Blitz

Welcome to the 6th floor.

Today’s contributors are: Ann, Sara, Billy

Subject: Facebook Games

Sara! Are you still playing bejeweled?” Ann asks, walking into the apartment with groceries.

From Pictures

I can’t stop! Help! This game is addicting!” Sara says.

Do you at least have the high score?” Ann asks.

The weekly reset just happened, and my cousin already has 111 thousand!” Sara complains.

Billy looks up from the paper he’s reading in the dining room. “Did you at least take your turn in our Scrabble game?”

Yes. But it’s your turn in Reversi.” Sara says.

You always kill me in Reversi, but I’ll take my turn in a bit.” Billy replies.

Got any chess games going?” Ann asks.

I haven’t played chess in a while. If you start one I’ll play though.” Sara says.

Is there anything you won’t play?” Ann asks, sarcastically.

Yeah yeah..I guess that’s why I get nothing done.” Sara responds.

You’ve got a huge mob, and an awesome farm. Maybe it’s worth it.” Billy teases.

Do they have that Chinese game on Facebook? Go? I’d play that.” Ann muses.

Nope. I guess it would take too long to play turn by turn. There are plenty of online ones if you wanted to get a game going though.” Sara says.

Maybe. Wouldn’t want to bog you down with yet another game to play. Shouldn’t you be looking for a job?” Ann asks.

I’m going to be a professional bejeweled player. It’ll be fun.” Sara responds.

Or you could actually…program a Go game. You are a computer programmer right?” Billy asks.

Hmm…maybe. I don’t know if I have the talent or patience to code something like that.” Sara responds. “Besides, it would cut into my bejeweled time.”

Craft Beer Week in NYC

Welcome to the 6th floor.

Today’s contributors are: Ann, Sara, Tabitha, Frank, Billy.

Subject: Craft Beer Week

Where’s Scott? I feel like I haven’t seen him in a couple of days.” Frank asks.

Beer Mug World Record...Anita Schwarz from Eichenau tries to set a new world record carrying 21 beer mugs at once across a distance of 40 metres in a tent near Zeltingen, Germany, 09 November 2008. However, Eichenau fails to transport the mugs in one piece. Ref: B284_123995_0002 Date: 09.11.2008 COMPULSORY CREDIT: UPPA/Photoshot

Scott’s been in California for an old high school friend’s wedding since Wednesday. He’ll be back Thursday. Which you’d know if you were ever awake during normal hours.” Tabitha replies.

It’s 2:30! How is that not a normal hour?” Frank asks.

He does have a point.” Sara says.

I play poker, just assume I’m on pacific time. Like Vegas.” Frank explains.

Couldn’t you be on Atlantic City time? Match us a little better?” Tabitha asks.

Stop knocking my sleep patterns. Anyway, Scott’s gonna miss Craft Beer Week.” Frank says.

I’d forgotten about that. I’m in.” Sara says.

Is it that pay one price drink all evening thing we did last year?” Ann asks.

Actually, that’s not until June. This is different. There are a bunch of different events, but the one I’m excited about is 60 different cask ales across three bars this weekend.” Frank says.

Actually, we missed one Labor Day weekend. I don’t know what’s wrong with us.” Sara says.

We did? Doh.. Anyway, There are some walking tours and food pairings during the week, but I think the cask beer is the best event. Who wants to come?” Frank says.

I’ll do it. Cask beers are always so interesting.” Sara says, raising her hand.

Nah, too expensive for me. I don’t appreciate beer the way you guys do. Give me a simple Corona and I’m happy.” Tabitha declines.

I’ll come. I had plans tomorrow but they fell through. Might as well do something.” Ann says.

Billy?” Frank asks.

Billy, who’d been half dozing on the couch the entire time looks up at Frank. “That’s fine. Buy me a ticket and I’ll pay you tomorrow.” Billy says, closing his eyes again.

What’s with Rip Van Winkle over there?” Frank asks.

He worked a really early shift this morning. Just got home a little while ago but didn’t want to nap before we get dinner. We’re going out to that Mexican place remember?” Tabitha explains.

Oh. Right.” Frank says.

What would you do without me to explain things to you?” Tabitha asks.

I’d probably just order Chinese.” Frank retorts.

Mexican is better than Chinese-American food any day.” Ann says.

Billy gives a silent thumbs up from the couch.

Atlantic City Road Trip

Welcome to the 6th floor.

Today’s contributors are: Ann, Sara, Tabitha, Frank, Billy and Scott.

Subject: Road Trip

Anyone want to see Jim Gaffigan? A friend of mine just emailed me that he has two extra tickets.” Frank asks.

From Pictures

Sure. He’s pretty funny. When?” Billy asks.

Tonight…at the Borgata.”

In Atlantic City? Nevermind, I’ve got an early shift tomorrow.”

Gaffigan is the brother on My Boys right?” Sara asks.

Yup. Apparently he’s a stand up comic too.”

Sure, I’ve got nothing better to do. When do we leave?” Sara asks.

An hour? Beat rush hour traffic and maybe get some dinner first. You remember Brett, my friend from Philly?”

The Phillies fan..yeah..I remember.” Sara grumbles.

It’s a comedy show, I’m sure baseball won’t come up.”

Oh, fine. Let me just powder my nose.”

Powder your nose? Is it suddenly the 20s? I have to warn you, Atlantic City is probably very different if we’ve gone back in time 80 years.” Billy lectures.

You planning on playing poker or anything? Should I grab a book, or some cash to play slots?” Sara asks.

Probably not, but might as well toss a book in the car. We can figure it out after the show.” Frank says.

I have to say, driving down to Atlantic City last minute…this guy better be funny.” Sara gets up to get ready.

Frank, to himself. “Hot pockets..”

6th Floor Romances

Welcome to the 6th floor.

Today’s contributors are: Tabitha, Frank

Subject: Romantic Updates

From Pictures

Frank meanders out of his room to find Tabitha lounging on the couch watching tv.

Hey, You’re not usually home during the day are you?” Frank asks.

Not regularly. They cut my secretary hours at work a bit. I was only doing 30, but now I’m doing 25. Rough times I guess.” Tabitha says.

Bummer. Well, you want to eat?” asks Frank.

It’s about that time. Yes. Pizza?” Tabitha suggests.

Nah. In more of a Mexican mood. “ Frank responds.

I approve. Let me just grab my coat.”

Coat?” Frank asks, “It’s summer and hot as hell out there!”

Except in restaurants, where they tend to overdo the air conditioning.” Tabitha says, heading for the door.

They walk down the stairs and down the block to the restaurant. There was only one table left, a two person table outside.

Frank sits down and looks around. “You’re right Tabitha, this air conditioning is unbearable!”

Oh, shut up.” Tabitha replies, putting her coat on the back of her chair.

Margarita please. On the rocks.” Frank orders.

Not a bit early for margaritas?”

It’s lunch time. It’s Mexican. You’re not going to let me drink alone right?”

Tabitha starts to object, and then thinks better of it. “Sure, I’ll have a frozen strawberry one.” Tabitha says to the waiter.

Waiter: “Coming right up.”

So how’s Rose these days?” Tabitha asks.

Oh, umm..we broke up a couple of weeks ago.” Frank says.

Oh, sorry. I wondered why you didn’t seem to be going out as much. So no one new yet?”

The margaritas come, and they order food. “No, not right now. Dating someone is a lot of work. I notice you haven’t been dating anyone in a while.”

Working at that IT place all I meet are geeky guys that want to talk about Star Wars or routers or whatever.”

Maybe you should introduce them to Sara?”

Sara doesn’t like geeky guys. She says they always are trying to one-up her with technical jargon to prove they aren’t out-geeked by a girl.”

That’s..sad. These guys have enough trouble finding women and they chase away the only ones with similar interests?” Frank rolls his eyes.

They don’t called it socially awkward for nothing.”

Ann just started dating someone new right? Rick..Ray..something with an R..”

Robert. I think they’ve only gone out twice so far.”

Doesn’t count until at least three in my book.”

I’m not sure she cares whether you think it counts or not.”

She better care!” Frank does his evil overlord laugh.

Tabitha quirks her eyebrow at Frank. “Oh, drink your margarita and stop your silly laugh.”

They finish their food, pay, and leave. No more evil laughter occurs during lunch.

6th Floor Blog And The Half Blood Prince

Welcome to the 6th floor.

Today’s contributors are: Ann, Sara, Tabitha, Frank, Billy and Scott.

Subject: 6th Floor Blog and the Half Blood Prince

Scott is logged into gmail, and instant messages the rest of the gang.

From 6th Floor Blog Photos

Scott: Frank! I got us tickets for Harry Potter tonight, the 3D IMAX version.

Frank: Sounds good. What time?

Scott: 10.

Frank: Late. Glad I don’t work conventional hours.

Scott: Sara! Potter? I bought the tickets for tonight.

Sara: What time?

Scott: 10.

Sara: Ugh! Fine..means I won’t get to sleep until after 1. I’m going to need a double dose of coffee at work tomorrow..

Scott: At least I didn’t buy the 2am showing.

Sara: 2am? Yikes. That’d almost be better, I could just go right to Starbucks for coffee and then on to work.

Scott: Tabitha! I got the Harry Potter tickets for tonight. You in?

Tabitha: Nah..I gotta work tomorrow.

Scott: So? You work everyday. You only Potter once.

Tabitha: You can’t use a proper noun as a verb.

Scott: The movie will let out at 12:40..we’ll grab a cab. You can be asleep by 1. 😀

Tabitha: And be tired all day tomorrow? That does not sound all that appealing.

Scott: I’ll buy you a coffee on your way to work if you like.

Tabitha: Ugh. Fine, just make me a cup of tea in the morning and we’ll go from that.

Scott: I don’t know how to make tea.

Tabitha: It’s a teabag in boiling water. I’ll show you what to do.

Scott: Deal.

Scott: Annie! Harry Potter tonight as planned?

Ann: Don’t call me that Scotty boy. 😛

Scott: I got the tickets.

Ann: I’ll meet you guys there then. You convinced Tab?

Scott: All it took was a cup of tea.

Ann: lol.

Scott: You’re in right Billy?

Billy: Potter? Yup. I just finished re-reading the book at lunch.

Scott: So you can chronicle what they screwed up?

Billy: Nah, just so I can when I have that “But I don’t remember Harry doing that..” moment, I can remember what actually happened. And so I can whisper to Frank how mixed up the movie is. He hates that.

Scott: He sure does. Catch you later.

Scott signs off.
