Hot Chocolate Festival

Welcome to the 6th floor.

Today’s contributors are: Ann, Sara, Tabitha

Subject: Hot Chocolate Festival

It’s that time of month again.”

Pills are in the medicine cabinet.”

No no..not that time of month. This time of month!” Sara holds up her City Bakery cup.

Hot chocolate festival! Which one is that?!”

Arabian Nights hot chocolate.”

Sounds intriguing.”

I think it’s..”

No no, let me guess. I’d say it’d have to be some sort of middle eastern spice. Maybe some cardamom? Saffron? Tumeric?”

Very possibly. Something citrusy. Orange peel maybe. Or I guess it could be saffron. What do I know?”

I want to go for Sunken Treasure Hot Chocolate.”

Hershey kiss at the bottom of the cup?”

Maybe. Can I have a sip Sara?”

Oops..sorry. All done.”

6th Floor Super Bowl Snacks

Welcome to the 6th floor.

Today’s contributors are: Tabitha, Billy and Scott.

Subject: 6th Floor’s Snack Post

I want to talk about something to you that’s very important to me.” Billy says solemnly, looking at Scott and Tabitha sitting on the couch across from him.

What kind of snacks are we having on Saturday? And what type of food for dinner?”

Scott snickers.

Ann and I are going shopping tomorrow. We’ll get a bunch of chips and frozen appetizers and the like.”

Get some of those little, wrapped hot dog things.”

Pigs in a blanket?”

Yes! Those!”

I saw this delicious recipe for Guinness brownies. We should make those!”

Beer brownies?” Tabitha makes a face. “That’s on you.”

Well, first we’ll need some Guinness.”

That’s a given.”

One for the brownies, one to drink while you make the brownies?”

Yeah! I like the way you think Tabitha.”

I’m just hoping for good commercials anyway. Like last year.”

No changing the topic. Should we order food on Sunday?”

You know food always takes a decade to get here on Super Bowl Sunday.”

We could order early.”

Order at the start of the second inning..”

Quarter.”

Whatever. And then it should be ready for half time right? Who’s performing this year?”

Springsteen.”

Springsteen? Geeze, they’re sure playing it safe these days.”

Springsteen’s good though..”

He is..but it’s still safe. Just don’t think that’s the right reason to pick a band.”

Any other snack requests?”

No, I trust your judgment.”

You do?”

No. But I trust you’ll shop early and I’ll be able to bitch about your choices early enough to get more stuff.”

Tabitha rolls her eyes.

Fortunate

Welcome to the 6th floor.

Today’s contributors are: Ann, Sara, Billy and Scott.

Subject: Fortunate

What’s that smell?” Ann asks, walking in.

Dinner!”

You cooked?”

No, Scott took care of dinner this time.”

Ahh, so it’s take out.”

I could cook if I wanted to, but those Chinese dudes down the block do it so much better.”

Break out the fortune cookies!”

This is a new place actually, they just opened. How could they know our fortunes already?”

Magical cookie voodoo, here they are.”

Woah. Are those half chocolate?”

They are!”

Marble fortune cookies, this I can get on board with!”

Sara bites into a fortune cookie, and pulls out her fortune.

I like the chocolate! Delicious.”

Billy yanks the fortune out of her hand: You are filled up with a sense of urgency. Be patient or you may end up confused.”

Sara frowns. “What’s that mean?”

It was right! You are confused!”

It means you are rushing around so much that you’ve forgotten why you’re rushing around.”

Profound!”

Scott opens his and reads it aloud. “No one ever drowned in his own sweat. What? What kind of fortune is this? I think they’re defective.”

Open your mind. It’s suggesting that that you shouldn’t be afraid to get a little dirty, do a little work.”

Who said I’m afraid dirty? Not me!”

Relax Scott, I don’t think the Cookies are meant as a personal insult.”

Passive aggressive fortune cookies? Now there’s an idea.”

As long as they’re chocolate.”

Amen.”

100 years of Chocolaty goodness

Welcome to the 6th floor.

Today’s contributors are: Ann, Sara, Tabitha, Frank, Billy and Scott.

Subject: America’s Original Creme-filled Sandwich Cookie

Hey! Look what I found! America’s Original creme-filled chocolate sandwich cookie!

Oreos? Eh..”

No! Hyrdox!”

I always thought Hydrox were just a generic knock-off of Oreos.”

Well you’d be wrong!”

Oreos, Hydrox..all a little sweet for me.”

I can’t remember the last time I had a Hyrdox actually. I do know that the name comes from combining the ‘pure’ ingredients hyrdogen and oxygen.”

For a cookie? That’s kind of lame.”

I don’t really care what they call them, as long as they taste good.”

It says ‘100 year anniversary’ on the bag. I think they were actually off the market and the company being bought/taken over the last couple of years.”

Weren’t there something called ‘Droxies’ out there?”

Sounds familiar.”

Isn’t that that candy brand they sell at Target?”

That’s Choxie.”

So what? Oreo’s are too sweet for you but you know the candy brand Target sells?”

I don’t care for Oreo’s okay?”

We’re talking about Hyrdox anyway!”

Oreo, Hyrdox.. Whatever! Give ‘em here.” Scott tears into the bag and takes a cookie. “Yummy.”

They still going with that crappy hard to seal up bags? Haven’t you noticed what a wonderful job Oreos did with creating that nice peel/seal type top?”

I don’t pay much attention to bag details Tab..besides, I’ve never had a bag of cookies around long enough to go stale.”

Then I guess we should give this bag of Hydrox the same treatment. Who’s with me?” Scott asks, and hands out cookies.

M & Ms and Chocolate Ice Cream

Welcome to the 6th floor.

Today’s contributors are: Ann, Sara, Tabitha

Subject: The Girls Eat More Chocolate

Hey Ladies, Look what I found!” Sara says, to Tabitha and Ann who are hanging out in the living room.

M & M premiums? Mint Chocolate sounds interesting. Are they like the Indiana Jones ones?”

I don’t know. I haven’t tried them yet.”

Well, what are we waiting for!”

I’ve got some new ice cream in the freezer too as long as we’re taste testing things.”

Can’t hurt.” Sara says, opening up the M & Ms.

They all grab a couple and look at them.

They look like rocks.”

They do a little bit. And they don’t have their signature crispy shell.”

Does that mean they disprove the whole ‘melts in your mouth, not in your hand.’ theory?”

Probably. They’re kind of chewy. But good.”

What’s the description say?”

Ann picks up the box. It’s white chocolate mint wrapped in dark chocolate.”

I don’t think I care for them. The chewiness is throwing me off. I think they’re a little too sweet.”

They are a little sweet, but I really like them. They don’t feel like I’m eating M & Ms though. It lacks that satisfying crunch when you bite into them.”

I could live without the candy shell I guess. I do like these though.” Sara says, reaching for another handful.

Someone should pick up some of the other types and try ‘em out.”

I’d like to try the mocha.”

Coffee flavored? Of course you would.”

Okay, break out the ice cream. What flavor?”

.“Costa Rica Rainforest Vanilla and Chocolate. It’s made by Choctal. Actually, I looked up their website, and it turns out they’re environmentally friendly and eating ice cream supports the rain forest and all that.”

All well and good…but does it taste yummy?”

Let’s find out shall we?” Ann grabs three spoons and the pint of ice cream out of the freezer.

Oooh. It’s all swirly.” Sara takes the first spoonful. “Mmm…It is very good.”

The others dig in.

Excellent ice cream. Rich and creamy. They make other flavors?”

Yeah, I love the flavor, and I like the vanilla and chocolate mixed too. Much better than your average vanilla/chocolate supermarket brand.”

They have just chocolates and vanillas. They have single origin chocolate or vanilla though.”

Single-origin? I guess this one is Costa Rica. They’ve been doing that single origin thing with chocolate more lately.”

It does make sense. Cacao beans, vanilla beans, coffee beans…What’s the difference?”

Very true. Wow..I guess we’re just going to finish the pint?” Sara asks, looking at the rapidly disappearing ice cream.

Might as well. You know Billy or Scott would finish it off on us anyway if we left it.”

In that case, dig in!”

Bagel Statistics

Welcome to the 6th floor.

Today’s contributors are: Sara, Frank

Subject: Bagel Statistics

It’s early morning and Sara is up to have breakfast before going to work and Frank is still up from spending the night gambling and watching cartoons.

What have we got to eat around here?”

I picked up bagels yesterday. I think there is a French toast in there.”

Yesterday? Bagels are only at 85% quality when they’re a day old.”

You could always toast it.”

Toasted bagels are always a flat 70% quality.”

Unless it’s a frozen or non-New York bagel.”

Well yeah, then toasting actually improves it, but it’s still around 60-70%.”

Why would you eat a non-New York bagel anyway?”

We didn’t have a whole lot of choice down in South Carolina. I barely remember what breakfast was like before I came up here and could have bagels everyday.”

Probably healthier.”

I wouldn’t go that far. Southern food is anything but healthy.”

What do you figure, bagels degrade exponentially?”

Yeah. You figure it’s around 85% after one day, but I’d say it drops to almost 60% by the day after, and becomes an almost inedible 25% by that third day.”

That’s why we freeze them after the first day or so.”

Yup, it’s just logical. Once the quality of the bagel drops closer to the toasted quality, you might as well freeze them to preserve them.”

I really like frozen salt bagels after a day of sitting. The salt melts a little, and then you toast them and make them nice and warm, and salty without being overpoweringly salty.”

And the toasting keeps them from being mushy from the melted salt, yeah.”

Often a good topping, be it salt or everything or poppy can boost a bagel an extra 5% or so.”

Yeah, that’s true. A bad bagel is made worse when it’s a plain bagel with no other flavor to hide behind. That’s why I wish I could find a place that makes good chocolate cream cheese.”

Chocolate? I’ve only seen chocolate chip, but I’ve always assumed it’s way too sweet for a bagel.”

They are. The chocolate taste is nice, but it’s too sweet, they need to use dark chocolate or cocoa powder or something. I gotta go now, enjoy your day, or night, or whatever you’re up to.”

Don’t work too hard.”

Oh, I won’t.”

6th Floor Blog Reviews Chocolate

Welcome to the 6th floor.

Today’s contributors are: Ann, Sara, Tabitha, Frank, Billy and Scott.

Subject: 6th Floor Blog Reviews Chocolate and M & Ms

So I love reading those chocolate review blogs we have linked on the blog, and Billy gave me an idea.”

Does it have anything to do with all those M & Ms he brought home yesterday?”

Yup, you got it. I’ve never tried either of those flavors.”

Wildly Cherry? Are they really that wild?”

Guess we’ll have to find out. Were you guys really going to scarf down all these M & Ms without waking me?”

Figured you needed your beauty sleep.”

Beauty sleep? He’d have to sleep for a month.”

Frank punches Scott. “You got these at M & M world I assume Billy? Why are they differently shaped?”

Well, the Mint green ones are crisps. They’re promoting the new Indiana Jones movie. What is it about the green ones anyway?”

I guess that’s why the green ones have what look like images from the movie on them. Green ones are the sexiest M & M.”

Have you ever seen the Crispy Orange one? He looks…well, Crispy.”

Yeah, he’s a little jumpy. Paranoid.”

Damn, he needs to lay off the drugs.”

Hey, just because you’re paranoid, doesn’t mean someone’s not out to get you.”

Maybe the purple M & M is gunning for his job or something.”

The purple one probably wants a promotion or something. He or she is the equivalent of an M & M intern.”

Okay, everyone is here so I’m going to taste these things.”

Wow, this cherry is surprisingly good. I like it.”

Yeah, a nice warm cherry feel to it.”

The mint crisps are okay. I think the mint is a little strong.”

I like mint, so I like these, but you may be right. I wonder why they decided to make them crispy anyway.”

Maybe crispy is back in style? I like the cherry ones too. I hope they keep these around.”

It’s got a cherry flavor without erasing the chocolate flavor, which is nice. I don’t know why some seem thicker than the others, they all seem to be the same solid chocolate inside.”

Beats me, I almost thought they were crispy at first, but they don’t seem to be.”

You should’ve stopped into the Hershey store and gotten those New York Cheesecake Hershey Kisses. I’ve been wanting to try them.”

Actually, I did! They didn’t have them.”

The Times Square Hershey store didn’t have New York Cheesecake Kisses? How ironic”

Easter Eggs

Welcome to the 6th floor.

Today’s contributors are: Ann, Sara, Tabitha, Frank, Billy and Scott.

Subject: Easter

Wow, I think I ate way too much junk. My stomach is angry at me.”

Mine too. I actually ate half of that huge chocolate bunny my parents sent me.”

You girls are lightweights.” Billy says, buttering himself another piece of Easter bread.

I can’t believe we went through a loaf and a half of that stuff…you must have eaten half of one yourself Billy.”

It’s good stuff. Ann is a good baker.”

Thanks. Those pastries Frank bought were delicious too.”

Want another? There are plenty left.” Frank says, peeking into the bakery box.

No! I’m full. I’m on chocolate hiatus.”

Chocolate hiatus sounds like a sin.”

It probably is.”

I think I’ve eaten too many eggs. I think I had five today, that’s a lot of cholesterol.”

Maybe if Tabitha hadn’t insisted we dye so many…”

You’re right, I think four dozen eggs may have been overkill, but it was fun!”

I ran out of ideas though. And then Sara had to make too many blue and orange Mets colors eggs..Speaking of which, are you getting up to watch any of the Red Sox against the As in Japan Sara?”

Probably not. It’s on at 6 right? I’ll probably wake up and catch the end of one of them, just to see some real baseball.”

Yeah, I may just stay up all night. We’ll see. I have to remember to make sure all my Boston and Oakland players are active in my fantasy leagues though.”

Yeah, I should do that too.”

Party Planning

Got an email from Sara today, out on a job interview in San Diego. Some preliminary party planning ideas.

I had a lot of time to myself on the plane to San Diego, so I was thinking about the party. More Coconut rum, but this time better planned drinks. No Desert Islands! We’ll pick up some other ingredients and make Mai Tai’s and Bay Breezes and other tropical themed drinks. I think all the palm trees out here are going to my head. I’ve also had almost nothing but McDonalds and coffee all day. Maybe I can rip up one of these trees and take it on the plane? We could have our very own palm tree on the 6th Floor! I wonder if that would violate our lease…

So far my plane gets in early Friday, so I should be able to help you shop and cook. We should make chili, that’s always fun for parties. I assume Mark’s coming right? And Billy is bringing Janine? We’ll have to try not to chase them off by having a party as dull as last years, although it is fun when it’s just a few of us. I’m bringing back chocolates from the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, but not for the party, just for us. I’m going to go get ready for my interview now, probably get some more coffee. I’ll see you tomorrow.
