{"id":2258,"date":"2012-08-21T08:34:46","date_gmt":"2012-08-21T12:34:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ceetar.com\/optimisticmetsfan\/?p=2258"},"modified":"2012-08-21T07:38:06","modified_gmt":"2012-08-21T11:38:06","slug":"the-re-sign-ronny-cedeno-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.ceetar.com\/optimisticmetsfan\/2012\/08\/21\/the-re-sign-ronny-cedeno-campaign\/","title":{"rendered":"The Re-Sign Ronny Cedeno Campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Everyone knows about <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/shoppke01.shtml?utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_campaign=Linker\" target=\"_blank\">Kelly  Shoppach<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hairssc01.shtml?utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_campaign=Linker\" target=\"_blank\">Scott  Hairston<\/a><\/strong> and how they both could help the Mets next year if they&#8217;re re-signed, but <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/cedenro02.shtml?utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_campaign=Linker\" target=\"_blank\">Ronny  Cedeno<\/a><\/strong> is not getting enough love.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ronny  Cedeno is the backup middle infielder and has gotten 140 plate appearances this season. \u00a0He&#8217;d probably have more if he hadn&#8217;t had a brief DL stint. \u00a0He&#8217;s got an .822 OPS with a .367 OBP. \u00a0 Of Mets with 100 at-bats, he&#8217;s 3rd in OBP behind <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wrighda03.shtml?utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_campaign=Linker\" target=\"_blank\">David  Wright<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/baxtemi01.shtml?utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_campaign=Linker\" target=\"_blank\">Mike  Baxter<\/a><\/strong>, and Scott  Hairston overtakes him in OPS due to his awesome slugging. \u00a0 Ignoring the obvious problem of having three part time players out-performing most of the regulars, Ronny  Cedeno would be a really useful player for the Mets next year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;ll only be 30 next year and plays the middle infield positions pretty well. \u00a0He hits right-handed which is useful for the Mets if they continue to have a pretty lefty-heavy team. \u00a0 He&#8217;s not really a stolen base guy (hasn&#8217;t attempted one all year) but he&#8217;s not slow. \u00a0He&#8217;s not really a power guy, but you can live with that from the backup in the middle infield, and he does have three in limited time this season.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Certainly he&#8217;s having a career year, and it&#8217;s been so few at-bats that it&#8217;s hard to rule out it being anything but luck, but he has increased his walk rate by over 4% to a very good 10.7% and raised his extra base hit percentage. \u00a0This seems to reflect the not swinging at bad pitches and waiting for &#8216;your pitch&#8217; that has been Dave Hudgen&#8217;s philosophy. \u00a0His swing percentages are down, also suggesting he&#8217;s laying off balls and unhittable pitches. \u00a0 So perhaps he really has learned something in New York, even if his .455 slugging percentage is probably unrealistic.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Given the option of believing Cedeno has made progress at the plate versus looking for another guy to fill that role that we hope can contribute, I&#8217;d definitely like to keep Ronny here next year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Everyone knows about Kelly Shoppach and Scott Hairston and how they both could help the Mets next year if they&#8217;re re-signed, but Ronny Cedeno is not getting enough love. &nbsp;
