{"id":563,"date":"2010-02-25T08:26:39","date_gmt":"2010-02-25T13:26:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ceetar.com\/optimisticmetsfan\/?p=563"},"modified":"2010-02-25T00:33:42","modified_gmt":"2010-02-25T05:33:42","slug":"unsuccessful-franchises","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.ceetar.com\/optimisticmetsfan\/2010\/02\/25\/unsuccessful-franchises\/","title":{"rendered":"Unsuccessful Franchises"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are eight teams remaining in Major League Baseball that played in the National League in the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century through to today: The Atlanta Braves, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Chicago Cubs, the Cincinnati Reds, the San Francisco Giants, the Philadelphia Phillies, the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the St. Louis Cardinals.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width:auto;\">\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"http:\/\/picasaweb.google.com\/lh\/photo\/W77ozgaN1y78y0Ohb5ycVw?feat=embedwebsite\"><img src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_WiYnnqmj-NY\/S4YKGLbmMxI\/AAAAAAAAIhY\/F9Lqh9jVOh4\/s800\/10000%20losses.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right\">From <a href=\"http:\/\/picasaweb.google.com\/ceetar\/MetsStuff?feat=embedwebsite\">MetsStuff<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p>Even though I\u2019m not a basketball fan, I find myself routing for the New Jersey Nets.\u00a0 They\u2019re on pace to break the record for worst NBA season this year, surpassing the 1972-1973 Philadelphia 76ers.\u00a0 It\u2019s my feeling that I want to keep the city of Philadelphia associated with failure.\u00a0 Prior to the Phillies winning in 2008, the city had gone 25 years without a championship in any major sport.\u00a0 The Phillies are the only professional sports team to have lost 10,000 games: an unprecedented level of failure.<\/p>\n<p>This got me thinking about the other older teams that have been around as long as the Phillies.\u00a0 How are those teams doing?<\/p>\n<p>The Braves will be the next team to lose 10,000 games.\u00a0 They have a record of 9854-9883.\u00a0 That\u2019s good for a .499 winning percentage, which is pretty decent.\u00a0 They actually have a shot at reaching 10,000 wins first.\u00a0 They need to win 96 games next season to get above .500 for their history.<\/p>\n<p>The Giants were the first team to 10,000 wins and the Dodgers, Cubs, and Cardinals have joined them.<\/p>\n<p>The Pirates and the Reds both have winning records.\u00a0 The Reds have 9824 wins to 9548 losses, and the Pirates, even after being a joke for the last two decades, have a record of 9753-9579.<\/p>\n<p>The other old team, the Philadelphia Phillies, are in another class altogether.\u00a0 They hold a record of 9038-10,167.\u00a0 That\u2019s good for a .471 winning percentage which is 26<sup>th<\/sup> of active franchises.\u00a0 Only the Padres, the Rangers, and the expansion Rays have a worse winning percentage.\u00a0 If the Phillies went 96-66 every season it would take them 38 years to get over the historical .500 mark.<\/p>\n<p>The Mets aren\u2019t exactly in great shape either, although they\u2019ve won as many championships as the Phillies in roughly a third of the time.\u00a0 They only have a .479 winning percentage and a 3655-3981 record.\u00a0 They have a losing record in all three stadiums they\u2019ve played in, but hopefully they can fix that this year.<\/p>\n<p>Read and comment on this post at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nleastchatter.com\/realdirtymets\/2010\/02\/25\/unsuccessful-franchisesunsuccessful-franchises\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Real Dirty Mets Blog.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are eight teams remaining in Major League Baseball that played in the National League in the 19th century through to today: The Atlanta Braves, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Chicago Cubs, the Cincinnati Reds, the San Francisco Giants, the Philadelphia Phillies, the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the St. Louis Cardinals.
