Carlos Beltran Beats The Phillies

Last night I watched Carlos Beltran play right field and beat the Phillies.  Even though he went 0-4, you can tell he’s going to be a great fit on that team.  He makes the team so much better, and can provide the offensive boost they really need.

There are so many great Carlos Beltran moments with the Mets that it’s impossible to name just one.  He’ll be sorely missed regardless of how the team does.  Carlos Beltran was a truly Amazin’ Met and one of the greatest players in franchise history and one day he just might be a Hall of Famer wearing a Mets cap.

Good luck in San Francisco Carlos.  Maybe we’ll still see you again at Citi Field this year..

Mets Fans at Last Night’s Giants Game

At least, it felt like that didn’t it?  The truth is there weren’t that many Giants fans at Citi Field, but the Mets fans had very little to cheer about.  There were a lot of isolated groupings of Giants fans, and pretty much all of 302 in the Pepsi Porch was loud and cheering, as well as a group behind the visitor’s dugout.  The few times the Mets fans did get some chants going when the game was still tied, the Giants fans were drowned out.

Initially we boo’d, or Lets Go Mets’d, over the Giants cheering, but by the end of the game a lot of people had left and we were cold and there just wasn’t anything to cheer for.  Cowbell Man seemed awfully pitiful with very few people joining in.

The game was cold, it felt like April, or San Francisco.  Even with the Giants and Tim Lincecum on the mound, it felt like a poor showing of fans.  Mets Police did a little digging and found that a local bar sponsored a Giants Fan trip to Citi Field.   If the Mets continue to flounder I imagine you can expect more of these types of events becoming affordable for groups.

I’m tired of Willie Harris.  He hit two double play balls and failed to even get a sacrifice in a key spot.  He’s quickly approaching Gary Matthews Jr levels and I hope he’s quickly off this team.   I know some have soured on Jason  Bay, but this game would’ve been a lot different if he’d been in the lineup.  I don’t begrudge him the paternity leave, but the Mets missed him.

In all three games against the Cy Young award winners lately I felt like the Mets have done a good job, but really they failed to get the big hit when it matter.  Key walks, singles and long AB to drive up pitch counts are nice and all, but if you don’t capitalize, it’s all for naught.  I really miss Johan Santana.  Get well soon Johan.

Still, Tim Lincecum is quite good.

I do feel like the Mets will win the finale.  I sense a seven inning Pelfrey performance in which he gives up merely two runs on a double after a walk and a hit.  Izzy, K-Rod, game over.  5-2 Mets.

Did Wednesday’s Lost Cost the Mets Millions?

Animated Gif Money (18)How much money did Wednesday’s loss cost the Mets?  The different between 15-13 and 16-12 is huge, as is bouncing back from a bad series with the Phillies with a winning one against a lesser team.  The Mets after their awesome home stand had a ton of good will brewing in the fan base, but they threw it all away with a miserable road trip.

Even if the Mets split the road trip, I think most fans would still be feeling good about the team.  They’d buy tickets, they’d head out to Citi Field to see the Giants, and more importantly, to see the Mets.  The Nationals come in again next week, and who really wants to see the Nationals if the Mets are playing poorly?  (Besides die-hards like me, who’s probably going to two of those games)

So, how many fans are going to now stay home for this stretch of games? 5000 a game? 10000?  The Mets haven’t been drawing well, it’s not yet summer, and they’re coming off some bad play. Between ticket prices, parking, concessions, and souvenirs the Mets are going to end up missing out on a lot of money that they may have gotten just off one more win.

I’m sure the Mets are aware of this.  They know what the perception of the team is, and they have access to their own records and attendance figures.  While the answer isn’t as simple as a player move, or a bad lineup, you wonder where the Mets would be and how we’d feel about the team if they’d cut Gary Matthews Jr, Frank Catalanotto, or Fernando Tatis for Chris Carter, Nick Evans or Jason Pridie.  How much better would we feel if Jerry Manuel rested relievers better, didn’t rest Castillo for Cora one game in each of the last three series, or didn’t stick with guys like Gary Matthews or Mike Jacobs when everyone else realizes they have nothing to offer?

So the Mets are aware of the problem, and know some of the problem areas.  It seems unlikely they’ll wise up and get a decent manager in here, but I’d definitely bet on the roster being shaken up a bit.  I think the Mets trust a guy like Carter over some kind of center field replacement like Jason Pridie or Jesus Feliciano, but I’ve been wrong before.  Maybe the Mets are leaning towards sparking excitement through young players, such as they did with Ike Davis when Chris Carter may have done.  Could it be that Fernando Martinez could be the starting centerfielder on Friday against the Giants?

Phillies Suck..Have a Keychain

As I write this the Islanders are losing to the Flyers, the Giants are trailing the Eagles in the division, the Phillies are two-time National League champs and the Mets have yet to make a major upgrade this offseason.  I’m not interested in the NBA so I get no great pleasure from the 76ers being almost as bad as the Nets.

Still, I’m not ashamed to wear my Mets pride dangling from my keys in the form of a keychain slash bottle opener from www.wholesalekeychain.com.  They’re solid keychains that I haven’t managed to mangle, lose, or break yet.  Given the sad state of the New York Mets, the bottle opener is getting more use than is probably good for me.

I can’t get excited about the baseball Winter Meetings.  Sure there is a chance something will get done, but it’s 95% rumor and speculation.  It’s all fluff with no content, and even though some things do get done, things could get done anyway.  A lot of the bigger pieces, like Holliday, probably won’t be happening soon, and no matter how many backup catchers the Mets sign, I’m not going to be satisfied until it’s spring and I know where they stand and how the team looks.  I’m also not going to call out Omar and criticize every little move or non-move he makes.  I’ll reserve judgment until April 5th, and see who takes the field on Opening Day.  Much like Rome, the 2010 World Champion Mets weren’t built in a day.

Why I’m Watching Baseball

What I’m Rooting For Now

Sure, the Mets are out of it. Everyone has been injured. The manager is still a disaster, and there is still no obvious plan in place going forward. So what should we watch when we’re drawn in to watching baseball? What should we be rooting for?

September call-ups are always a popular choice, even if the Mets aren’t going to have that many. Biggest guy to watch is Josh Thole, the prospect catcher. Catcher is a big hole next year which makes catching prospects even more important. If Thole is for real, then the Mets can look for a short term stop-gap type solution behind the plate for one year. Can watch Murphy and Evans and Pagan and Parnell as they jockey for position and hope to be in the plans for next year.

From Mets

Mainly though, I’m rooting against the Phillies and the Yankees. It still looks unlikely that either team will miss the playoffs, but stranger things have happened. Both bullpens are suspect, as Lidge goes for the blown save record, batters figure out Phil Hughes, Mariano gets older and frailer, and other guys don’t step up the possibility for a collapse looms. I think both teams are beatable, especially in the playoffs if it comes to that. I don’t expect to see either in the World Series.

Still, the state of baseball frustrates me. The Phillies and Yankees don’t lose as often as I would like, and too often grab victory despite teetering on the edge of failure. I would get no enjoyment watching either of them play baseball in October, and hope I don’t have to. The Islanders first game is October third. The Giants and Jets both start playing this Sunday. I have no idea when the NBA starts, but I think it’s a couple of weeks yet.

Winning on the Road

All analysts and radio hosts wanted to do on Wednesday and Thursday is discuss the Mets upcoming road trip, how it was a ‘tough trip’, and try to break it down. I heard plenty of “You’d sign for 5-5”. I heard some guys, like Michael Kay, say you’d be happy with 4-6. Good teams should never accept a less than positive outcome, and it looks like the Mets both agree, and are a good team.

You have to play to win, and you have to try to win every series. That would have been 7-3. Maybe you drop a game here or there, on this ‘tough trip’, and go 6-4. That’s still winning baseball, and the Mets are off to that good start. They won the first series, against the weaker team, and are 3-1 on the road trip. You’d have to be crazy to accept 2-4 the rest of the way. Despite having issues, injuries, bad managing, and mistakes in the field, the Mets have been winning more often than losing lately. There is no reason to think they can’t beat the Dodgers. If this is truly a team that can, and it can, win a championship then they can beat anyone. This includes the Red Sox, who are arguably the best team in baseball and may very well be getting Kevin Youkilis back for the series against the Mets.

You don’t like how that last game went in San Francisco, but you’ll take the series. They haven’t played well in the park overall and they almost swept. Let’s see how they do against the Mannyless Dodgers, and then the Red Sox. If you’re into scoreboard watching in May, the Phillies are playing the Reds who have been looking good, and then the Yankees who are suddenly managing to win games. I’m scared for the most home runs in one game record with those two teams playing in that small park, with the crappiness of the pitching involved. There may be more home runs than singles. The Braves play the Rockies and the Blue Jays.
