Did WFAN curse the Mets? Tweet This Post
More on the WFAN curse I tweeted last weekend. (The Mets haven’t won the World Series since WFAN has been in Queens. Now That they’re in Manhattan…good sign for 2010? ).
WFAN’s first broadcast in Queens was July 1st, 1987. The Mets were the defending World Champions. The Mets went 17-30 from that point for the rest of the season, finishing in second place. The Mets have been back to the World Series just once in that time.
Now that WFAN’s studios haved moved to Manhattan, a location the Mets haven’t played in in 45 years, maybe 2010 is the year for the Mets to claim their third championship.
And unlike the Yankees, who are playing in five hours, if the Mets make the playoffs they will sell _every_ ticket.

I truthfully believe the negativity constantly spewed by people like Mike Francesa are the reason for the Mets constant hiccups.
If you can’t even get some positivity from a big part of your own flag ship station then how are you supposed to achieve any long term success?
All I have seen since I’ve become a Mets fan in 1987 is constant praise at Yankee success and when any negativity surrounds them it’s always directed at one person at a time, not the entire organization. For the Mets it’s always been quite the opposite.
All this trash spewed by media causes the fans themselves to create more of a negative outlook and in turn it makes it “more acceptable” to boo and razz the players when they strike out at home.
I wish it was just the WFAN that is the problem but even their own writer on the web sit – Mary Noble seems to always have a terrible, negative, and downright slimy outlook on even the good things that happen to the Mets.
I know it’s not just me but it always seems like people are more often trying to tell The Mets and even the fans that they suck.

If the Mets could get their act together and put together a few decent seasons together, you’d hear the tone change quickly. That, however, will not be happening anytime soon.

Well, they _could_ get their act together this season. It’s not like they’re that far off.

Dear God, people need to grow up. Curses are just a terrible, simpleton excuse. I refuse for the Mets to be has unbearable with their “Woe is me?” curses like Red Sox fans were and what Cubs fans are today.
24/7 sports radio, however, has made the Mets FO either extremely gun-shy to reactionary with a lot of their moves.
I think sometimes sports fans lose sight of the fact that for the most part many sports franchises are not that different from each other. I really do not think the Mets are a unique case.

Wow, this curse has some serious reach. By my count, only the Phillies and Red Sox are immune….
Oh wait, maybe you meant July 1st 1987.

Heh. good point. Silly typos. let me fix that. Thanks jc.
CMG: I’m not really serious. It’s the off-season. Just something to talk about.

It’s not WFAN. The 1994 New York Rangers (who were thought to be cursed) and the 2007 New York Giants had WFAN as their flagship radio station and it did not stop either team from winning it all. If you want to look at a Mets curse that began in 1987, look to Fred Wilpon buying half of the Mets before the 1987 season.

I’m sorry, last I checked, the Mets have had 42,000 empty seats for the last 3 weeks…I think you have bigger fish to fry than preoccupying yourself with the Yankees’ attendance.

I guess you already know that MLB exonerated good ol’ Mo.
But I, for one, was stunned when I learned you were actually going to get your wish and find out if the Mets COULD outsell the Yanks in the postseason. And we don’t even have to wait til next year to find out…
