Hunting For Old Mets VHS Tapes

A lot of the official broadcast tapes for old Mets games and post/pre game shows like Kiner’s Korner have been lost in time.  However, Mets fans are always recording things.  I bet there are hundreds of tapes of old Mets stuff on TV, including Kiner’s Korner episodes no one’s seen in decades, sitting in boxes in fans’ basements.

Why not put out a public service announcement during Mets games asking fans to check out what they have?  Set up a phone line and have some interns catalogue what people have.  Then offer free Mets tickets to anyone that sends in something new.  Before these VHS tapes, and VCRs, are lost forever we should recover what we can.  This doesn’t have to be limited to Kiner’s Korners or broadcasts.  If you open the door I bet you’d find some interesting stuff.  Mets appearances at Little League dinners, old appearances on news programs, and even some fun commercials.

Mets fans love their history, and we’d surely watch some of these things on SNY.  The station isn’t exactly overloaded with things to air that keep Mets fans tuning in beyond the games.  I’m sure we’d get a kick out of some of that old stuff, even the old advertisments and sponsors.  The Crane Pool Forum even devotes their Player of the Game awards to an old sponsor: Schaefer.   It can’t hurt to ask can it?

You Will Go To Citi Field on Sunday

hof_hat_300x250The Mets Hall of Fame game is Sunday.  Before the game they’re having a ceremony and inducting Frank Cashen, Dwight  Gooden, Davey Johnson, and Darryl Strawberry into the Mets Hall of Fame. There are still tickets available.  There are still TOO MANY tickets available.  Shannon over at Mets Police has been all over this, and rightfully so.  It’s one thing if the mid-level seats that are priced above what’s affordable for many people don’t sell out.  It’s quite another if the Promenade section doesn’t.

The lack of Mets history in Citi Field was one of the biggest complaints about the place last year.  More so than even Pelfrey letting Jody Gerut hit the first home run in the place.  Even if you only go to a few games this year, this should be near the top of the list of options.  It’s honoring one of our greatest teams.  Great players who we enjoyed rooting for for many years and the leaders who helped get them there.   True Mets.   It doesn’t matter what they did off the field or later in their careers in lesser leagues.  They did something for Mets fans that can never be erased, and to miss out on that for petty reasons like inflation, personal feelings about current players or administrators, or the organization or park not being precisely how you like it is just sad.  It’s one thing if it doesn’t fit into your schedule, your personal finances, or you’re flat out busy that day, but it’s quite another to make a specific effort NOT to go.    If you’re going to stop celebrating the best parts of the Mets history, what are you going to celebrate?

New Citi Field Scoreboard Idea

I agree with many Mets fans that wish there was more Mets history at Citi Field. I tend towards wanting the little tokens rather than grand museums(or both). I think the stairways are too boring; they need a Mets logo on them. I’d like to see pictures of Mets, or the concession stands named after them.

I like the Lets Go Mets on the scoreboard. Maybe it’s a little cheesy, but it’s nice. I think it needs punctuation though. I think it should be Lets Go Mets! After all, aren’t we supposed to be shouting it?

In fact, why not two exclamation points? While you’re up there, why not connect it to Mets history, if only in a small way? One exclamation point for each championship, as seen in this photo.
