4 Players I do NOT Want on the Mets Next Year

David Eckstein : Cause he sucks.  Read Fire Joe Morgan for more.
Javier Vazquez : I don’t want to hear any “NL is weaker” crap.  I don’t want to sign players that had a good year two years ago. Vazquez is at best a project.
Orlando Hudson : He’s not just very good.  Provides a little more power than what we’ve got, but fades down the stretch, is pretty whiny and is getting up in age.  He’s not coming off a good year either, despite being on the best team in baseball.
Manny Ramirez : Not sure he’s even a fit anyway, but I’m sure he’ll get mentioned by someone.  Old, not really a fit.  Another huge ego guy that’s not going to accept a diminished role and will demand too much money.

  1. My 4 people I don’t want as mets next year:
    1) Oliver Perez: he sucks. case closed.
    2) Luis Castillo: I think he could be service-able, but if jerry (or whoever manager) is not going to play him, he’s a waste of a spot.
    3) John Maine: he needs to get out of ny. best of luck elsewhere, but he’s not going to thrive in ny.
    4) Carlos Beltran in CF: I actually want him to stick around. he’s going to be motivated to play well in his contract year, and he’s going to suck up the pain more and play harder, but I just think Angel is a much better CF’er. He’ll hate it because it lowers his value, but for the team, they need to do it.

  2. I don’t expect Perez to be on the team next year, but at this point you lose nothing by letting him pitch winter ball and be a longshot (extremely long) for a job in Spring Training.

Castillo is a better option than Tejada, and certainly if he’s getting on base like he would playing every day and the guys in the middle of the order are hitting, he’ll score plenty of runs.

Maine was still injured last year, and I really think that hurt him. I wouldn’t give him more than a minor league minimum deal with a shot to show he’s recovered (and a new coach that won’t let him hurt his shoulder more by altered mechanics)

Beltran…well, we’ll see. I’m not sure the difference defensively between swapping Beltran and Pagan is very big. Something the new manager can decide in spring training depending on how they look, etc.

  3. I’m willing to accept any of your four guys, provided that they sign minor league contracts. (Not that I see any of them going that route.)

Four guys I don’t want to see in Mets uniforms next year:

Jerry Manuel – I’m tired of watching him throw his own players under the bus and mismanage his bullpen.

Oliver Perez – If he’s ever going to get his career going again, it’s not gonna happen in New York.

Francisco Rodriguez – His temper and the outstanding legal issues make me want to see him in another uniform, even though he was pitching well for most of this season.

John Maine – Nice guy, tries hard. But his mechanics are a mess & he’s had too many injuries because of it.

  4. The only guys on the roster I want gone are Castillo and Perez. Certainly would be willing to trade KRod and Beltran at the ASB next year if their values have risen (but not to a level that has the Mets in contention).

As for people not on the roster who I don’t want to see on the Mets next year:

Every available free-agent. In fact, the only roster addition I would welcome would be Uggla, but only if that did not involve the Mets paying a huge price in the trade.

  5. Oliver Perez – at this point, he just locks up a roster spot. He can’t throw strikes and his “stuff” isn’t worth keeping around to see if one day he figures it out. Just blame Omar and be done with it!

Luis Castillo – can’t hit the ball out of the infield and can’t field a ball 2 feet to his left or right. Therefore, why do we need him? Eat the contract, because nobody will take him. Again, just blame Omar and move on.

K-Rod – after punching the grandfather of your kids in the clubhouse, its gonna be tough to bounce back. On top of it, he has never lived up to the hype from his Angel days. However, legal issues aside, he may still have some value to a team, so fish around and try to trade him as part of the rebuilding process. Get a young live arm and maybe he’ll be a closer for you one day.

David Wright – Sorry, have to do it. Otherwise I wouldn’t be truthful. As the face of an overrated franchise, he too has been nothing but overrated. However, he is probably the only player on the current roster with any significant value to really jumpstart the rebuilding process and take this team in a new, fresh direction. I’m sorry, but I don’t see this team ever winning with Wright as its “leader”, so why not use him to bring back something that would get us closer to that championship we all want?

  6. “I’m sorry, but I don’t see this team ever winning with Wright as its “leader””

Except for the fact that the Mets DID win with Wright as a “leader.” They won the East in 2006 and were a grand total of 2 games away from winning it in 2007 and 2008, despite the fact that they had a team ERA over 5(!) in August and September of 2007 and a bullpen decimated by injuries.

Wright ranked #1 in WAR in ’07 and #3 in ’08. If the Mets had won 2 more games, he would have been a 2x MVP.

  7. Should read:

“and a bullpen decimated by injuries in 2008.”

And forgot that they missed the WC by a game in 2008, not the division (3 games).

  8. The difference between the Mets making it in ’07 and not making it is so small. Marlon Anderson doesn’t get called out at second on that game-tying play and the Mets beat the Phillies and win the division, Wright’s MVP, Charlie Manuel is fired, and who knows where we’d be.

  9. I’m sorry, but I don’t see this team ever winning with Wright as its “leader”.

Uh…who cares if DWright is a ‘leader’ or not?
Statement implies not only do you want to trade him for someone of equal value, that someone has to be a leader as well. And if that’s not what you’re implying, then why trade him at all?

If you take Wright at face value what you have is a very good hitter in your lineup, one who is at least average playing 3rd, who is still young and has no injury history.
Why would you trade a commodity like that?
